Reimagining Academic Library As Ashram

Interior Design
In today’s academic world, students face not only demanding workloads, but also a constant flood of information, screens, notifications, and social media, alongside performance anxiety and relentless competition. In an age when information is available in everyone’s pocket, the library can no longer remain merely a place for locating and accumulating knowledge. It must take on a new role: becoming a space that fosters presence, concentration, inner calm, and connection with oneself and the community. The project draws inspiration from the ashram model—an Indian concept describing a spiritual community dedicated to personal development—not as a religious institution or a representation of any particular culture, but as a spatial model for slow, mindful, and communal living. Within this space, the book is not merely a source of information, but a means of reflection. Unlike the screen, which tends to fragment and interrupt attention, the book invites lingering, focus, and a slower pace. Reading thus shifts from an act of consuming information into a process of introspection, contemplation, and connection.
