STEP IT is an interactive rehabilitation system designed to reignite the motivation to move among patients recovering from hip fractures. The system is based on an LED-embedded activity mat that transforms standard rehabilitation exercises into familiar games, providing immediate visual and audio feedback. The mat communicates directly with wearable sensors adapted for the ankle and shoes. These sensors track the leg's spatial position in real time—including the trajectory from point A to point B, speed, acceleration, and angle. This precise monitoring ensures correct movement execution and prevents injuries. The entire experience is integrated into a dedicated, accessible app specifically tailored for the elderly, which provides clear instructions for each exercise while tracking the patient's ongoing progress.

STEP IT was designed with a deep understanding of the needs of the elderly recovering patient, while fully adhering to the medical protocols for hip fracture rehabilitation. The system takes standard, monotonous rehabilitation exercises and transforms them into interactive games. Combined with the option to involve an additional person in the training experience, the system significantly reduces resistance to treatment and rebuilds motivation. Every detail of the product—from the user interface and the app, to the simple and accessible way the wearable device is put on—was meticulously designed to suit the capabilities of older adults. The result is a system that enables a respectful, continuous, and frustration-free rehabilitation experience, accompanying the patient from their very first step at home all the way to returning to their daily routine.
Understanding that in the early stages of rehabilitation, many patients are still unable to stand independently or are afraid of falling, the system was designed to enable effective interactive training even while seated. This solution makes movement accessible from the very first day at home, completely neutralizing fear, and allowing the patient to gradually build their strength and confidence in preparation for the transition to standing.
As the patient progresses in their rehabilitation and gains confidence, the need for new motor challenges arises. Reconfiguring the mat into an elevated structure integrates the element of height into the exercise, enabling work with targets that require lifting the leg and a wider range of motion. This structural transition increases the difficulty of the games in a controlled manner, adapting the system for more advanced training stages in the recovery process.

The system includes two pairs of sensors by default, a choice designed to offer dual flexibility: First, it ensures continuous, frustration-free training—there is no need to pause a workout or wait by the charger; users can simply switch to the second pair and continue. Second, the additional pair is always available for a second person (a family member or caregiver) who wants to join the experience and play alongside the patient, which amplifies social connection and the motivation to recover.
